BACTRIAN LAPIS LAZULI VESSEL
Ca. 300-200 BC or later. A miniature and delicate vessel made of two parts: a hollow container and a bell-shaped lid, decorated with horizontally oriented bands. These vessels were possibly used for storing cosmetics or ointments. Lapis lazuli is a semi-precious stone with an intense and radiant blue color that was highly sought after in antiquity and still holds a special place in our modern world. Used for ornamental purposes, lapis lazuli was especially valued in ancient Bactrian art.
