BAMANA, Mali.
BAMANA, Mali. Hardwood, dark brown patina from use. A rare two-tiered monoxyl stool; the circular seat is supported by four figures of ancestors depicted standing with their arms raised. Here, the ancestor is no longer merely depicted but becomes a column, a structural element, symbolically fulfilling a supporting function. Early 20th century. H. 45.5 cm (minor imperfections and losses).
