Under the covers, Adolf Hitler rants, raves, and blows his brains out in Dick Ayres' "The Beast at Bay."

Flamethrower covers spread like – you guessed it! – wildfire during the pre-Code era. '50s funnybook fans had no qualms about Yankee soldiers roasting Reds alive, a recurring motif in mags like Battle, Battlefield, War Comics, G.I. Joe, Exciting War, etc. But a decade later, during the Vietnam War, flamethrowers would become emblematic of battlefield barbarity, and although no international treaty bans them, the Defense Department issued a directive in 1978 prohibiting their tactical use.______________________________________________________________
