BAULE PEOPLES, IVORY COAST, POLYCHROME CARVED WOOD PORTRAIT MASK (MBLO), H 12", W 6", D 4" | Worn as part of the Baule theatrical tradition known as “Mblo,” combining dramatic skits and solo dances, this type of mask would have been sculpted as an idealized representation of the prominent member of the community. White pigment (possibly kaolin) decorates the eyes. a delicately textured tri-part coiffure and facial scarifications are also features of this mask. Within Baule culture, Mblo portrait masks are appreciated as the most refined and long-standing form of artistic expression. Provenance: Property from a Bloomfield Township, MI private collection.
Condition Report: Loss to pigment on both eyelids.
