A rare eyewitness depiction of the defeat of the "patriotes" during the Papineau rebellion. Louis Joseph Papineau (1786-1871), leader of the Parti Patriote in Lower Canada, fled to the United States following a series of failed uprisings in 1837. Beauclerk’s Views, based on his own sketches and lithographed by Nathaniel Hartnell (c.1829-1864), depict military operations in which he served as a Captain in the First Royals of the British Army. “The most valued account of the Rebellion of 1837 is the set of seven ... lithographs after sketches made by [Beauclerk] ... The views are attractive in both coloring and composition, and depict various actions in November and December of 1837, at St. Hilaire de Rouville, St. Charles, and St. Eustache” (Allodi). Gore's Operations at St. Denis...") and 6 hand-colored lithographed plates with tissue guards (light spotting and soiling on some plates, one plate worn along fore-edge).
