BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRE, Charles François (1766-1854). Expose des travaux relatifs a la reconnaissance hydrographique des cotes occidentales de France, suivi d'un precis des operations geodesiques qui ont servi de base aux cartes et plans des trois premieres parties du 'Pilote Francois', par M. Daussy. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1829.

First edition. Beautemps-Beaupré was appointed chief hydrographer and keeper of the Dépôt de la Marine (predecessor of the Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service) in 1814. He took part in all the important hydrographic labors undertaken during the Empire and the Restoration, and became known as ‘the father of hydrography’. Polak 518.

Quarto (282 x 211mm), with large folded engraved map (one or two occasional spots, but a crisp, wide-margined copy). Contemporary red morocco, gilt rolled border to sides, flat spine decorated and direct-lettered in gilt.
