BERLIOZ HECTOR: (1803-1869) French composer and conductor of the Romantic era. A.L.S., H. Berlioz, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (´Samedi soir´; 1850?), to [Hippolyte-Prosper] Seligmann, in French. Berlioz informs his correspondent that ´Nous avons un comité très important lundi prochain à 3 heures, veuillez n'y pas manquer´ (Translation: ´We have a very important committee meeting next Monday at 3 o’clock; please do not miss it´) and further instructs Seligmann ´En outre convoquez tout l’orchestre pour la répétition générale de Samedi 19 à 9 h. très précises. Le garçon d'orchestre ira prendre vos lettres mardi matin´ (Translation: ´In addition, please summon the whole orchestra for the dress rehearsal on Saturday 19th at 9 o’clock sharp. The orchestra attendant will collect your letters on Tuesday morning´). VG
Hippolyte-Prosper Seligmann (1817-1882) French violoncellist and composer, and a member of the committee of Berlioz's Grande Société Philharmonique de Paris, founded in 1850. Comprising an orchestra of around one hundred instrumentalists and a chorus of more than one hundred voices, the Society aimed to present monthly concerts at the Salle Sainte-Cécile devoted to the great masterpieces of the orchestral and choral repertoire. Despite an auspicious beginning and Berlioz's considerable personal investment in the venture, it survived for little more than two seasons.
