SARAH BERNHARDT'S COPY, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED TO HER, "á Madame Sarah Bernhardt / hommage d'admiration & de respect / Germain Bapst." A penciled note in his hand on the inside margin of the title indicates the binding style "beau rouge" to conform with the titles in Bernhardt's library, and the spine bears her monogram. Sarah Bernhardt was the queen of the theater stage in Paris during the Belle Époque. Immortalized in posters and artwork by countless artists, she was quite simply the most famous actress of her time.
