BERNHARDT SARAH: (1844-1923) French stage Actress. The most prominent actress of her time. A.L.S., Sarah Bernhardt Damala, a rare form of signature, three pages, 12mo, Elvaston Place, London, n.d., 1882, to a Notary, in French. The document bears her monogram heading, Bernhardt referring to an outstanding payment and apologizing for her lack of order with such matters, states in part `I thought that this invoice was long ago paid. The brave man has not wanted to create any trouble to me, despite the behaviour of his landlord. I am grateful to him´, she further informs her correspondent about her return date to Paris and states `..my husband will visit you on Wednesday next week..´ Accompanied by a contemporary 4 x 6 photograph, Studio Paul Boyer, unsigned, depicting Sarah Bernhardt in costume in Edmond Rostand´s play L´Aiglon based on the life of Napoleon II. EX £80-120 Aristides Damala (1855-1889) Known as Jacques Damala. Greek Officer and later Actor. Husband of Sarah Bernhardt 1882-89. Died at the very early age of 34 of a cocaine overdose.
