BEUR AL HATORA [= commentary on the Pentateuch]. [and] KAVANOT HATORA

[ translate ]

By Ovadya ben Yaakov Sforno Sforno [ca. 1470 - ca. 1550] (Sforno, Ovadiah)
In Hebrew. 184 pages. 195 x 145 mm. New endpapers. Printer's device on title page. Initial word of each of the Five Books of Moses is historiated. This book book has 92 leaves, is complete, and includes Kavanot HaTora. Hamafteakh [= the index], consisting of leaves pey alef to pey hey [= leaf 81 to leaf 85], is bound out of order at the very end. Hamafteakh is an index, so binding it at the very end was not illogical, but it puts the pagination out of order. Approximate English translation of the Hebrew inscriptions on first two leaves of the book are: "My purchase [?] Mordechai son of Yosef [?] God is my rock and my redeemer. God has favored his servant Menashe son of Yosef Yon and saw to it to divide between me and my brother Yon" [Signed:] Yosef Yerek Marbled boards with old quarter vellum binding in excellent condition. Title handwritten on spine in a very old hand. New, white, endpapers. Even though the Italian physician Obadiah Sforno taught Judaic studies to the Christian Hebraist Johannes Reuchlin, Sforno?s commentary to the Bible has been embraced by even the most orthodox of rabbinic scholars, many of whom find the commentary, or at least certain passages, to be of extreme halachic interest. See EJ, Volume XIV, columns 1209-1211. Bound with author's Be?ur Edited, with a preface, by Solomon ben Abraham Luzzatto [16th century]. At end, a postscript ending with a poem by Shmuel Arkevolty [1515-1611], followed by an index and the author's Kav?anot ha-Torah. References: Encyclopedia Judaica, vol. 14, columns 1209-1210.; Friedberg; Bet 52, 1; 8. Vinograd, v.2, p. 254; Venice 538 Steinschneider, Cat. Bodl., 6688 (2); Roest, Cat. Rosenthal. Bibl., p. 912
