BLACK-FIGURE OENOCHOE
BLACK-FIGURE OENOCHOE
Greek art, Attic, late 6th century B.C.
A very beautiful black-glazed terracotta oenochoe with white and red painted highlights, featuring a trilobed spout and a pear-shaped body decorated with a scene depicting a quadriga driven by two male figures: a hoplite wearing a cuirass, a helmet with a tall crest, and a shield, accompanied by a bearded charioteer holding the reins, dressed in a long white tunic fastened with a belt and draped in a feline pelt. At the center of the scene, the goddess Athena stands, striding forward with her head turned toward the figures, wearing a long robe, a helmet with a tall crest, and the aegis fringed with serpents. The scene is framed by scrollwork and meanders at the top and bottom, as well as friezes of ivy leaves on the sides.
Intact.
Height: 24.5 cm
Provenance: Collection of Charles Gillet (1879–1972), then passed down through the family
