BLACK GROUSE TUREEN
Künersberg, circa 1755, attributed to.
Faience decorated in overglaze enamels. On a domed terrain base applied with oak leaves and acorns. The plumage painted in shades of brown with characteristic hatching to the wings. Unmarked.
H 26.5 cm, L 26 cm.
Chips to the rim.
Provenance:
- Christie's auction, June 26, 1978, Lot 84.
- Peter Ducret Collection, Kilchberg; acquired at the above auction through Heinz Reichert.
This model type, with its distinctive base and brown-painted wings, continues to raise questions and has repeatedly been attributed to different manufactories.
Peter Ducret supported his attribution to Künersberg by comparison with a tureen in the form of a small duck in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich, which was long attributed to Künersberg but is now catalogued with a question mark (inv. no. 34/383).
The following examples are known from the literature and the art market:
- Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe: "Neuerwerbungen" 1966, pp. 173/174, "Bildkatalog" 1968, no. 267 (Höchst).
- Christie’s, 26 June 1978, lot 84 (a pair, Brussels).
- "Fayence Sammlung Erzherzog Ludwig Viktor", Dorotheum Vienna, 24 October 1921, no. 424, pl. XII (South German or Holitsch).
- Horst Reber, "Die kurmainzische Porzellanmanufaktur Höchst II", 1986, p. 69, fig. 45 (Höchst).
- Georges Ségal, Auctiones AG Basel, 26/27 April 1990, no. 295 (Höchst).
- Schloss Höchstädt, formerly Klaus Nottbohm Collection, inv. no. HöS.Ko461 (Künersberg, later South-West German?).
- Christie’s London, 10 June 2010, and Kunsthandel Esch, London Antiques Fair 2011 (Höchst).
- Schlesisches Landesmuseum Opava (Troppau, Bohemia), unpublished series of comparable birds.
