BLUE AND WHITE DRAGON BOTTLE VASE, QIANLONG MARK AND PERIOD
Dimensions: Height 34 cm Wide 17 cm Depth 17 cm
Weight: 1409 grams
An elegant blue-and-white porcelain bottle vase with a rounded pear-shaped body, tall cylindrical neck and gently everted rim. Its surface is painted in underglaze cobalt with sinuous dragons moving among cloud scrolls and flaming pearls above a lower register of stylised waves. The long neck continues the animated dragon design, while geometric borders structure the expansive painted field. The base is described as bearing a six-character Qianlong seal mark.
The dragon was a potent emblem of imperial authority in Qing decorative arts, while the flaming pearl conveyed heavenly power and auspicious energy. Varying densities of cobalt give movement to the scales, manes and clouds as the decoration turns around the swelling body and rising neck.
