BLUTEAU (Pe. Rafael)
VOCABULARIO Portuguez e Latino [...]. Coimbra: No Collegio das Artes da Companhia de Jesu, 1712-1728.

10 v.; 290 mm.

FIRST EDITION. COMPLETE COLLECTION of one of the most important documents of Portuguese philology, including the two supplements. Father Rafael Bluteau, born in London, son of French parents, came to Portugal in 1668 by order of his religious congregation, learning our language in a short time and dedicating in-depth study and erudition to it. According to Innocent, “Fr. Bluteau was a truly wise and erudite man in the fashion of his time: more or less versed in all types of studies, he had a particular predilection for dead and living languages. [...]. The Portuguese owe him eternal gratitude, for giving them a Dictionary that they did not have, and that they needed so much; shaking himself and achieving it only with his own effort and study, which Academies could not overcome before, nor after!”. Very rare, important and valuable.

¶ Inocêncio, v. 7, p. 42; Importante Biblioteca Particular, 4, 98
