BOTETOURT CO., VALLEY OF VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE JARS, LOT OF TWO, lead-glazed, comprising one approximately one-gallon capacity cylindrical example having medial alternating incised rings and sine wave bands with four incised rings below, and one approximately one-quart capacity example featuring sharp shoulder with flared flat-top rim and beaded foot. Probably Obenshain Pottery, Botetourt Co., VA. Mid 19th century.

Condition: Small example having two moderate flakes to rim edge with wear to shoulder; large example with chip and flakes to rim with moderate glaze wear. Firing flaws, including moderate kiln kiss and pops, as made.

Size: 6 7/8" H, 3 1/2" D rim; 9 7/8" H, 5 7/8" D rim.

Provenance: Provenance: Property from the estate collection of Dan and Doris Chrisman, Roanoke, VA.
Note accompanying smaller jar states that piece was purchased "at Obenshain estate sale and is without doubt Obenshain pottery used for herbs or preserves."
