BOTETOURT COUNTY, VALLEY OF VIRGINIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE JAR, lead-glazed, approximately three-gallon capacity, bold ovoid form with plain rim, beaded neck, and applied raised open-loop handles with thumb-pressed terminals. Hand-painted later with image of house and stream on one side and golden rod and daisies on reverse. Probably Henkel-Spigle Pottery, Botetourt Co., VA. 1830-1850.
Condition: Painted over chips and flakes to rim and base, having some minor losses to later paint decoration and wear to rim interior.
Size: 14 5/8" H, 5 5/8" D rim.
Provenance: Provenance: Property from the estate collection of Dan and Doris Chrisman, Roanoke, VA.Catalogue Note: Handwritten note accompanying jar states that the piece was acquired from the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Fluke, granddaughter of Spiegle (sic).
