BRAUN, Georg; HOGENBERG, Franz Nobilis Hannoniae comitatus descriptio. Pays de Haynault tenu de Dieu et du Soleil. [Cologne G. von Kempen 1588] Copper engraving, 34 x 47 cm, original handcolouring (light waterstains, sm. tears in lower blank margin, and along centerfold). Framed (not studied outside frame). Map of Hainaut County taken from the third part of the famous "Civitates orbis terrarum" by Braun and Hogenberg (a variant with the description given by van der Krogt: the first line of the text on back ends with "deinde"). First and ideal representation of the province as a garden ("Wapenkaart/Jardin d'armoiries") surrounded by a palisade or wall punctuated by 22 cities represented as towers, with the great arms of Hainaut in the upper part and the city of Mons as capital in the lower part. The whole contains more than 200 coats of arms, ordered according to the classical division of the three orders. Captions in Latin and French in the lower margin, text on the back.
