Heading:
Author:
Title: BRENDA STARR No. 3
Place Published:
Publisher:Superior [Indicia: Superior Publishers Limited]
Date Published: June, 1948
Description:

CGC certified: VG (4.0). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Dale Messick. Stories and art: Dale Messick, and, according to Overstreet, possibly Matt Baker. Contains newspaper reprints and original material. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade in 15 years. A 5.0 sold for $310 in March 2021.

Shell game: Brenda Starr's outfit leaves little to the imagination as she faces creepy Professor Squell in his weird grotto. The statue of a buxom ebony goddess stands among tumescent stalactites and stalagmites, reinforcing the mood of decadence and squalor. Superior, the enigmatic Canadian publisher best known for its low-rent EC reprints, specialized in psychosexual scenarios calculated to pique the interest of randy young readers.

"After all, who read the most comic books during WWII? Servicemen and young boys, that's who." — Mark Squirek's review of "Brenda Starr: The Complete Pre-Code Comics Books Vol. One." The New York Journal of Books, online, October 31, 2013.

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.

Consignments welcome for PBA's December 2021 Comic Book sale. Top prices for Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age, Silver Age, original art and ephemera. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
