British George III tipstaff or tipstave, dated 1797. Brass body engraved “III GR Taunton 1797”. Large ball finial. Large wooden handle. 13 1/4 " overall length. 898 grams. Tipstaffs or tipstaves pre-dated the establishment of the British national police force and were given to certain public officials (such as bailiffs) as a symbol of their office - and also for use as a club when necessary.
