Fine British, George IV dated (1829) police tipstaff or tipstave of office. Brass construction with wood handle. Brass crown finial. The body engraved “IV GR City Officer Chester 1829” in fine script. 10" long overall. 288 grams. Tipstaffs or tipstaves pre-dated the establishment of the British police force and were given to certain public officials (such as bailiffs) as a symbol of their office - and also for use as a club when necessary. They were also used as symbols of office by the police in their early years.
