BRUNI, Leonardo (1370-1444). Libro intitulato Aquila volante che se dilecta de scriptura antica. Venice: Quarengi, 1506.
Study copy of this scarcevernacular edition of one of the most successful compilations on the history of ancient Rome, a work traditionally attributed to Leonardo Bruni, an attribution confirmed by more recent scholarship while recognising the contribution of Guido da Pisa to the composition of the text. The work traces the history of Rome from its origins through an original interweaving of history and legend, including episodes relating to the Trojan War, Julius Caesar, Cato and other figures of classical antiquity, in a narrative intended for a vernacular readership. The considerable publishing success of the work is attested by the four incunable editions issued between 1492 and 1497, followed by the present Venetian edition. Variant B, with variations in the colophon: line 1, ... delectabile... instead of ... admirabile... ; line 2, ...doctissimo homo miser instead of ...doctissimo Monsignor ; line 3, ...da Latino in uulgare sermone instead of ...da Latino in Vulgare toschano .

Folio (285 × 200 mm). Woodcut ornamental initials of various sizes (lacking leaf A5; browning and staining; restoration to the margin of the title-page and final leaf). Nineteenth-century binding with vellum spine and gilt-lettered label. (1)
