Caldwell, stating that he cannot offer a loan because others have not fulfilled their obligations to him, remarking that there are no clues as to who shall receive appointments in President Martin Van Buren's cabinet, and commenting on the health of their mutual friend [Gardner?] Furniss. 1 page, 4to; small cello tape reinforcements at fold intersections verso, vertical folds through signature (without loss), faint marginal discoloration from prior matting, remnants of hinging at upper edge verso. - Washington, 7 February 1837
