Abel Buell's map of 1784 is the first map of the United States published in America and the first to be copyrighted in the United States; it is also the first map printed in America to show the flag of the United States. Until the New Jersey Historical Society's 1961 exhibition Early Maps of North America, Buell's map had never been in an exhibition and was unknown to scholars. The Society published this monograph and color facsimile following the acclaim of that exhibition.
