BUFFALO HELMET MASK - Cameroon - Bamileke

[ translate ]

BUFFALO HELMET MASK - Cameroon - Bamileke Late 19th – early 20th century. Wood, with a dark, crusty patina in places. Dimensions: 53 cm. The head features a snout elongated toward the front, a powerful muzzle with wide nostrils, and a slightly open jaw revealing strong, geometric teeth. The eyes are carved in a rounded almond shape. Two massive horns, curved inward, crown the animal’s head. Within the chiefdoms of Cameroon’s Grasslands (the Bamileke chiefdoms and the Kingdom of Bamoum), the buffalo is an important totemic animal, symbolizing combativeness and courage. These buffalo masks belong to the Fon (king) and are brought out during agricultural or judicial ceremonies. Photographs by Paul Gebauer (1912–1977), an American missionary and anthropologist of German origin, taken in the chiefdoms of the Bamenda region show that the buffalo mask never danced alone. It was part of a set of zoomorphic masks (leopards, birds, elephants) that evoked the forces of the bush allied with the king’s power. Expert: Coryse Mwape Internal ref: 279
