BURGOS SCHOOL (Ca.1500 / .) "Saint Sebastian or

An interesting panel that would have formed part of the predella of an altarpiece whose provenance is unknown, depicting a figure elegantly dressed with arrows, an attribute of Saint Sebastian. It is possible that it is a portrait "a lo divino" with attributes of the saint. In any case, it seems that the work must have been executed in the late 15th century in the north of Castile, most probably in the area around Burgos. Stylistically this panel could be related to Diego de la Cruz (documented in Burgos between 1482 and 1500), a fine example of Hispano-Flemish painting of the period, probably of northern origin, although he lived in Burgos. He would also be close to the so-called Maestro de Burgo de Osma, to whom Post took as a reference an altarpiece made around 1500 for the chapel of San Ildefonso in Burgo de Osma cathedral in order to ascribe to him a group of works executed in the area around that town. . 92 x 59 cm (total).
