Tarzan of the Apes. Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co., 1914. 8vo. Publisher's dark red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, upper cover lettered in gilt and ruled in blind, original pictorial dust jacket by Fred J. Arting, gilt to spine slightly rubbed, minor wear to jacket along joints, and at corners. Custom folding cloth chemise and morocco slipcase.A FINE, UNRESTORED COPY IN JACKET OF THE FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, FIRST BINDING, FIRST STATE, OF THE FIRST TARZAN BOOK, with printer's name in Old English script, "A.C. McClurg" in one line to spine, and no acorn. Burroughs's greatest literary creation, Tarzan of the Apes was initially turned down by publisher McClurg. When its popularity exploded with it's publication in All-Story magazine, and subsequently in newspapers across the country, McClurg came back to Burroughs and wanted to publish it. Tarzan quickly became one of the most important and well known works in popular fiction, spawning 25 years of sequels, numerous films and adaptations throughout the 20th-century.
