BUTTLE Gélin (1954-2000)
BUTTLE Gélin (1954-2000)
Laos Voodoo - 1993
Acrylic on canvas
76 x 76 cm
Certificate of authenticity from the Carlos Jara Gallery (Port aux Princes)
Note: The artist worked as a fisherman and in a factory in Port-au-Prince until its closure during the embargo in the early 1990s. This circumstance led him to refocus on painting, with the encouragement of the Bourbon-Lally Gallery, among others. A rising star of the current generation of Haitian artists, Gélin Buteau died in July 2000. His brilliant, fantastic and often disturbing vision will be missed. Buteau's work has been exhibited internationally, including the exhibition "Error and Eros: Sacred and Profane Love" at the American Visionary Art Museum (1998), and is published in Artists in Haiti: One Hundred Others (1997) and Haiti: Angels and Demons (2000), among others.
