Bactrian Bronze Cosmetic Jar

Central Asia, Bactria, ca. early 1st millennium BCE. A tall, thin, cast bronze jar, made for holding cosmetics, perfumes, or something similarly valuable and perishable. The vessel is narrow, with an elongated, bell-shaped body, and a long cylindrical handle with a flared disc rim. A long, thin lid/applicator capped by a zoomorphic handle fits neatly within the body of the vessel. Size (w/ lid): 1.1" W x 9.375" H (2.8 cm x 23.8 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, by descent, moved from Germany in 1997, originally collected in the 1970s in Hamburg, Germany

Condition Report: One finial ornament missing from suspension loop. Finial is removable and has a possible loss to tip of pin body. Finial and vessel have heavy encrustations and earthen deposits. Vessel body is intact and very good, and both vessel and finial have great patina throughout.
