Bakhshaish

[ translate ]

mid 19th century, 311 x 239 cm, North West Persia, Azerbaijan

A huge red hexagon lies on the camel-coloured ground, its sides extending all the way to the border. It shows a design of loosely arranged stems, blossoms and large forked leaves drawn in the geometrical style that is typical of this region in north western Iran. The forked leaves attached to stalks may represent abstract animals. The spandrels are decorated with small and miniscule motifs, including animals and many amulets distributed informally by the weavers.

The rug was owned by a French family for several generations.

ESKENAZI, JOHN J., L'Arte del Tappeto Orientale. Milan 1983, no. 175

Condition
Signs of age and wear and some restorations. Both finishes repiled. Selvedges replaced in places.
