Baku Silk Embroidery
18th century, 100 x 99 cm, South Caucasus, Azerbaijan
This square silk embroidery in the "surface darning" technique on a cotton foundation was a bokce (wrapping cloth). The field design consists of rows of rosettes and rows of slanting or horizontal parallelograms. The diffusion of the rows of motifs creates a complex appearance. In literature, Caucasian embroideries in light pastel shades are usually attributed to Baku.
HALI Publications (publ.), Stars of the Caucasus. London 2017, no. 8.2, p. 149
Condition
Heavily restored, thin spots that are backed with fabric in places. Numerous missing sections, especially in the area of the white foundation. Mounted onto grey fabric.
