Ball & Thomas Daguerreotype/S Peck & Co.Union Case

The daguerreotype by James Presley Ball & Thomas Alexander, Cincinnati, Ohio, the case by Samuel Peck & Co., New Haven, Connecticut, Circa 1855. The brown thermoplastic cover molded with a view of the Virginia Washington Monument, located on the Capitol Square in Richmond, with the equestrian figure of George Washington atop the pedestal inscribed "WASHINGTON," above three of the six statues of Virginia patriots who took part in the American Revolution, two upper corners molded with trumpeting angels, the bottom of the oval frame centered by a shield flanked by flags and eagles perched upon shields, the burgundy velvet-lined interior cut with a foliate scroll device and housing a half-plate portrait of a seated gentleman, the inside of the back cover printed "GENUINE/ UNION CASE, / IMPROVED/ "GENUINE/ UNION CASE, / IMPROVED/ Fine Gilt and Burnished/ Hinge,/ S. PECK & CO.,/ MANUFACTURERS.," the brass mat stamped "BALL & THOMAS/ 120 W. 4TH. ST. CIN. O." H: 6.25 in., W: 5 in., D: 1 in.
