"Contes Drolatiques Droll Stories" by Honore de Balzac; illustrated by Gustave Dore, with the preface dated 1874; published by The Bibliophilist Society, London, undated early edition.

French author Honore de Balzac (1799-1850) wrote a collection of stories which were published in three sets of ten stories each, and these stories came to be known as "Droll Stories". Written in a lively manner with Balzac's characteristic wordplay using 16th century language, the stories make for engaging reading.

Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Dore (1832-1883) was a French artist, printmaker, illustrator, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor who worked primarily with wood-engraving. The government of France made him a Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1861
