Baptism of Christ

[ translate ]

Greek, 1750, tempera on wooden board,
size 41 x 35 cm. The iconography is ancient. Christ in the centre, standing in river Jordan. St John the Forerunner, who is represented on the left bank of the river bows forwards and stretches out his hand towards Christ to baptize him. On the right bank, three angels watching the scene. The Holy Spirit descends from a segment of heaven where God the Father appears, who is making a sign of blessing. The feast of the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan is celebrated on 6 January and, together with Easter, constitutes one of Christianity’s oldest feasts. With the Baptism, the appearance (Epiphany) of God in Jesus is celebrated. In other words, it is the first time Christ shows himself to humanity as God. From that moment on, Jesus is known as Christ. The refined and expressive painting represent the medieval Russian painting style. Authenticity of every icon is guaranteed. Every icon is sold with extensive written expertise.
