Note: Sir Nicholas Goodison notes: On Barbara Rae's second visit to Ardtornish in 1996 the weather was unrelentingly wet. Given her technique of soaking her paper with water, I am not sure that it mattered, but she chose to paint this picture on 21 August in the old kitchens, with copious water as usual. She told me some years later that this was the first of a number of flower paintings inspired by it, but she still considered it the best.
