Female circus performers often shunned the cumbersome long skirts that they were expected to wear, opting instead for leotards and tights—scandalous attire trumps impeded movement. Here, we see a troupe of women all dressed properly but inconveniently. "When showmen marketed circus women with sentimental Victorian discourses of domesticity, they did so, in part, to neutralize circus women's erotic and physically subversive presence—an impulse that led them to regulate circus women with well-publicized rules of conduct that dictated women's off-duty dress, social life, and bedtime" (Strobridge, p. 79).
