Bartholdi Signature on Rare Statue of Liberty Souvenir Card

A souvenir card depicting the Statue of Liberty signed by its French sculptor, Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) as “A. Bartholdi” at top right. The printed stock card shows the Statue of Liberty silhouetted by the slanting rays of an auspicious sunrise. The card is undated, but Bartholdi probably signed it during one of his visits to the United States in 1871, 1876, 1885, 1886, or 1893. Minor mat burn along the bottom edge, and scrapbook album mounting traces verso. Else near fine. 5.75" x 3.125."
After designing the Statue of Liberty, Bartholdi supervised its transport from France and oversaw its installation on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor. The fundraising phase of this statue-erecting process would take years, and indeed long surpass the actual 100th anniversary of the United States. Yet once the “Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World” was installed in 1886, it fundamentally changed the New York skyline. More importantly, the massive 151-ft tall copper-clad sculpture of a standing woman also provided an indelible symbol of our national character.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
