Only a few panoramic city views by B.J. van Hove are known. This painting was made around 1843, and shows a view of The Hague as seen from the Dekkersduin. The work shows from left to right: the Kloosterkerk along the Lange Voorhout, the Ridderzaal and Binnenhof, the Nieuwe Kerk along the Spui, the tower of the Oude Stadhuis on the Groenmarkt, the Grote or Sint-Jacobskerk, Teresiakerk, Willibrorduskerk and the regentengebouw of the Hofje van Nieuwkoop along the Prinsengracht. A watercolour in the collection of the Hague Archives and the work on offer can be regarded as studies for the large size work in the collection of the Haags Historisch Museum (inv.no. 1932-0009-SCH).
