Contemporary speckled calf gilt, red leather spine label , all edges sprinkled red. 13 x 8 1/2 inches (33.25 x 22 cm); xiv pp., with 113 engraved plates, numbered 1-110, with plates 1, 4, and 72 repeated, plates 55 and 85 are folding, engraved printer's device to title. Wear to calf, spine and boards unevenly toned, rear joint cracked and holding by two cords, front joint starting, hinges cracked, marginal tear to leaf A6, mild spotting to plates, sold as-is.
This richly illustrated work on Roman antiquities includes engravings of the mosaics in the Villa Corsini, as well as views of the tomb of Caecilia Metella, the pyramid of Caius Cestius, the mausoleum of Hadrian, as well as Trajan's column, various antique sculptures, and more. The work was an important source for neo-classical motifs, and it reissued several times, each with slight variations in the plate counts.
