Baryte & Dolomite Frizington, Arlecdon & Frizington, Copeland, Cumbria, England, UK "A 14 cm long amber prismatic terminated barite [sic] crystal associated with tiny brown dolomite crystals." And this additional notation from Mindat: "Baryte. Specimen is from the George Vaux collection at Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Scale at bottom of image is an inch with a rule at one cm.' - Rock H. Currier Among other things Britain is noted for, besides soccer riots and spotted dick, is the Barytes (Pommy-speak, here) of the Frizington area. Usually they show various colors, often in the same crystal. Pale yellow, a peachy rose and blue are often seen. Crystal habit can vary from flat, bladed type (the ones with the most color variation) to elongated, simple prisms that are almost equant in cross section, as this one is. Here the coloration is a dark 'honey' version of the stock pale yellow, with uniform color throughout. Most notable about Frizington Barytes is the size that they can achieve. The 5 ½" height of this one is impressive but not unheard of. This is just another Vaux treasure that Rock got out of Bryn Mawr College. Best guess is that this might have come out of either the Mowbray or Parkside mines - both of which are fairly close to each other. Overall Measurements: 5.5 x 2.2 x 1.6 inches (14.0 x 5.5 x 4.0 cm) Offered at no reserve Provenance: Ex. Bryn Mawr College, Ex. George Vaux Collections [RHC #1868, acquired 1972] MinID NYF-JPV [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
