Basin - Granite

Stunning, heavy traditional Japanese granite zenigata chôzu’bachi 銭形手水鉢 (water basin) formed like an old type of coin. The feet of the bassin is narrowed, which makes it look as if the stone floats. See last picture.
Cylindrical with on the top surface 4 stylized kanji 漢字 (Chinese characters) at the sides of the square water pool:
吾 (ware - I) , 唯 (tada - solely) , 足 (taru – sufficient) , 知 (shiru - wisdom) . Surrounding the pool which in itself represents the kanji 口 (kuchi – mouth) . This inscription is found often, for unknown reasons, on water basins in Japan. This is a Zen saying, pronounced “Ware tada taru o shiru”, that can be translated as: "I am content with what I am (have) . Rich is the person who is content with what s/he is,” or alternatively, "If you learn to be content, you are rich in spirit! " (Source: Onmarkproductions) .

Chôzu'bachi, also known as a water reservoir for the hands, is an ornamental feature frequently encountered in traditional Japanese gardens. Its purpose extends beyond mere decoration, as it serves as a vessel for ritual hand washing and mouth cleansing, and is in such environments called a tsukubai 蹲. Prior to engaging in the tea ceremony or stepping onto sacred grounds like Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, individuals partake in this purifying act. Chôzu'bachi embodies a profound cultural significance, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and spiritual preparation in Japanese traditions.
A well-known water basin that is shaped the same stands in the garden of the famous Ryôan’ji 竜安寺.

The water pool: Width 15. 5cm x 15. 5 cm and 9. 8 cm deep.

The age of such a stone item is difficult to determine. We think that this one is carved during the Taishô period (First part 20th century) , so around 100 years old. It has attractive ‘soft’ contours indicating weather corrosion for many years, a great sign of its older age, accompanied by a nice outdoorsy patina. It is in a very good original condition. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
