of deep rounded form, profusely engraved and decorated with inscription-filled cartouches interspersed by further cartouches and bands filled with geometric motifs

Inscriptions: Repeat of an Arabic phrase, Ya tal'at al-qamar al-munir ..., 'O you who has the face of a bright moon!'

A similar Mamluk basin, dated to the 15th/ 16th Century, is in the British Museum, London (Accession Number 1957,0802.3). For a comparable tinned-copper bowl offered at Bonhams, London, see Islamic and Indian Art, 7 October 2010, lot 150.
