GOLI WEAVING Loom PULLEY CALIPER - BAOULE - IVORY COAST

In African countries, weaving is a fundamental act.
Weaving also means constructing words, articulating them, giving them meaning.
The translation of its name among the Dogons means “squeaking of speech”.

In Dogon mythology, according to the ethnologist G. Calame-Griaule (La Parole chez les Dogon) , the loom is a metaphor for primordial speech:
"The teeth evoke the comb and the tongue which constantly comes and goes in the mouth, the shuttle; the pulley, from which the characteristic squeaks of the profession come, responds to the throat, that is to say more particularly the place in the larynx where sounds are formed; the heddles of the loom are represented by the uvula which rises and falls when we speak; the words themselves are the thread that the weaver transforms into fabric.

In the loom, which is built in the image of the universe, the pulley is in the center and is located on the weaver's horizon line, facing him.

From a utilitarian object, it becomes a work of art and an expression of a culture.
Depending on the region, these small objects of everyday life, carefully sculpted, offer infinite variations of representations.

They are generally stylized silhouettes, animal heads (cattle, birds, antelope, etc.) , human heads (most often female with an elaborate hairstyle) , janiform figures placed back to back, or even head to head. . .
More rarely we can find the representation of a domestic object or a full-length character.
