⁂ The author, father of Increase Mather, was one of the "thirty learned and pious Ministers" who worked on the translation of the various psalters brought to New England which became the Bay Psalm Book, printed in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1640, the first book printed in North America. Mather had arrived in New England in 1635 and became pastor of the church at Dorchester.
