[ translate ]

Heading: (Brautigan, Richard)
Author: Kaufman, Bob et al, editors
Title: Beatitude No. 1
Place Published: San Francisco
Publisher:John Kelly
Date Published: 21679
Description:

[13] mimeographed leaves stapled with an illustrated construction paper cover (with no rear cover, as issued.) 28x21.5 cm (11x8½").

Rare first issue of this Beat scene periodical, considered to be the voice of the Beat movement on the West Coast. The issue contains "Hymn from Kaddish" by Allen Ginsberg, and the first appearance of Brautigan's "The Whorehouse at the Top of Mount Rainer." Also includes work by Bob Kaufman and a number of others.

Bob Kaufman began Beatitude magazine with John Kelley, and William Margolis. Few local poets were considered acceptable by the established publishers of that time, and many had their first appearances in Beatitude. Although the first incarnation of the magazine only published 17 issues, it has had a lasting impact on the Beat literary movement.
Condition Report: Light wear and soiling to cover with a few minuscule chips at edges and corner tips; some creasing to last leaf at top of spine, toning to first leaf; very good.
