Hard boards, original decorated cloth, white lettering on spine [a little wear and soiling]; 5" x 8"; stamp of John Griff Edwards on the front endpaper and 'Contents' page, 338 pages, frontispiece and 7 monochrome sepia plates on glossy paper [all listed plates are present]; a little soiling, very good condition.

Sara Beaumont Kennedy (1859-1920), born Sara Beaumont Cannon, a descendant of several prominent Revolutionary War soldiers, was born in Somerville, Tennessee in 1859. She was educated at St. Mary's Hall in Raleigh, North Carolina, and began writing poetry while still a school girl. -- After returning to Tennessee, she continued writing, Sara Beaumont Kennedy was a prolific writer and was recognized nationwide as one of the outstanding literary figures of her day. She wrote a poetry book, a children’s book, two novels and numerous short stories, many of which were published in national magazines. Her poetry was regularly featured in the Commercial Appeal, and appeared in various national publications. After the death of her husband, death, she joined the editorial staff of the Commercial Appeal and came to be known as "the only woman paragrapher" of a major newspaper in the South. Her pieces for the Commercial Appeal reflect Kennedy's wide variety of interests and her vast knowledge of history, the arts and nature.

Harry C. Edwards (1868-1922) was an American illustrator and a painter noted for such historical compositions as Discovery of Gold in California. He grew up in Philadelphia, and studied art and design at Adelphi College in Brooklyn, New York, and at the Art Students' League in New York City. Afterwards, in addition to wildlife and Western-themed paintings, Edwards provided black-and-white illustrations for such large-circulation American magazines as McClure's and The Saturday Evening Post.

John Griff Edwards (1870-1912) belonged to the old established settler families in Virginia. His father and uncles served in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. The grandfather, LeRoy Griffin Edwards (1804-1866), was the president of the Confederate Convention of 1864. John's wife, Mrs. J. Griff Edwards founded and led the first of the United Confederate Choirs of America (1907). After that she was elected the Commander in Chief of the 'United Confederate Choirs.' In 1911 she published a volume titled "Echoes From Dixie A Collection of Songs Used in the South."
