In Focus: Memoirs of a Life in Photography, pioneering curator, writer, and photographer Beaumont Newhall commented, "It pleases me enormously to see how many people are now professionally involved in photography. The medium really has come of age in the most marvelous way. In the early 1950s my old friend Helmut Gernsheim and I had a pleasant luncheon together in Essen, Germany. Helmut jokingly rapped on the table and said, ‘The Society for the History of Photography will now come to order!’ We two comprised the entire membership! There just wasn’t anybody else in the world at that particular time–and for a long time afterward, I might add–as qualified as we were. And that was not so very long ago.” (p. 254)
