Beautiful Greek Gnathian Pottery Cup w/ Painted Motifs

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, near Ignazia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fabulous wheel-thrown pottery drinking cup with a petite circular base, a bowl-shaped lower body, a corseted neck, and a flared rim, all covered in lustrous jet-black glaze. The exterior of the body exhibits a wide register of yellow frets, white zigzagging lines, and white straight lines surrounding a central horizontal band of red pigment. A fine example of Gnathian ware, distinguished by its colorful decoration applied directly to the deep black-glazed surface. Size: 3.5" W x 3.25" H (8.9 cm x 8.3 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1960s
