Bede, Baeda or Bede, nicknamed Venerabilis (the Venerable; in English often Saint Bede or the Venerable Bede) (Northumbria, 672 or 673 ‒ Jarrow, 25 May 735) was an Anglo-Saxon monk who lived in the sister abbeys of Saint Peter and Saint Paulus lived in Monkwearmouth (part of modern Sunderland) and Jarrow respectively. Both places were then in the kingdom of Northumbria and are now in the northeast of England.

In addition to being a monk, he is best known as a Bible scholar, historian and saint. His most famous work, Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (History of the English Church and People) earned him the title of "father of English historiography". Bede was a skilled linguist and translator. His work made the books of the early Church Fathers, written in Latin and Greek, more accessible to his countrymen. In this way he contributed significantly to English Christianity. Bede's monastery had access to a library imported from Rome by Benedict Biscop, containing works by Eusebius and Orosius, among others.

In 1899, Bede was elevated to Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII. His name day in the Roman Catholic Church falls on May 25.
