Bedil, Dewa Putu (Bali, 1921 - 1999) Balinese Woman and Man

Influenced by Dutch artist Rudolf Bonnet, Dewa Putu Bedil, paints daily life scenes that are composed of elongated human figures set in properly ordered theatrial arrangements. He pays great attention to the patterns of the textiles of their clothing. Along with Anak Agung Gde Sobrat Bedil was among the first Balinese artists to take on Dutch artist Rudolf Bonnet's suggestion to paint scenes of daily life in Bali. Influenced by both Western art and traditional Balinese art, he played an important role in developing Modern Balinese art, the compositions of which are developed through layering of scenes. The elongation of his human figures might seem to be another of Bonnet's artistic influences, but on the other hand, in his elongations Bonnet also might have been influenced by Balinese art including Bedil's paintings.
