"Uncle Tom's Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly", by Harriet Beecher Stowe, published by John P. Jewett, 1852, set by Hobart & Robbins, printed by Geo. C. Rand, First Edition with "1852" on the bottom of the title page and copyright 1851. Complete set of both volumes of the First Edition. The volumes are from the same printing: sixtieth thousand (May 1852); illustrated with six full page plates by Hammett Billings. All six plates are present.

Perhaps the most influential work of American literature and a cornerstone of 19th century literature.

Hard boards, original publisher's cloth with gold stamped vignette on the front boards and blind stamping on the back boards, (some wear: mostly edges, rounded corners: see photo]; 5" x 8", "L.F. Kingsbury" is ink written on the first blank page of the 1st volume, 312 + 322 pages + 6 engraved plates, some foxing [see photos], good+ condition.

An important work whose life began in the limited circulation periodical 'Washington National Era' weekly (1851). Over the next ten months as reader after reader continued to pass their copies on to others it quickly became a national sensation.

The first With six engraved plates by Hammett Billings printing in book form was issued in March 1852 and consisted of 5,000 copies. The 3000 copies were sold on the first day of issue, the complete printing was reportedly sold out in a few days. The second printing of 5000 sold out by the end of March. On May 15, 1852 fifty thousand copies of the first edition were sold. Before the summer was out sales had topped the hundred thousand mark. Until the end of the year 300,000 copies were sold.
